A sensory deprivation floatation tank (also called an isolation tank or float pod) is a special enclosed pod or room filled with warm water mixed with a high concentration of Epsom salts.
This makes the water extremely buoyant, so you float effortlessly on the surface. The water is heated to match skin temperature, and the environment is dark and quiet — removing most external sensory input.
What to Expect
- Arrival & Preparation
- You’ll shower before entering to remove oils, lotions, and perfumes.
- You typically float without clothing to enhance the sensory isolation (but swimwear is optional).
- Earplugs are usually provided.
- Inside the Tank
- You’ll enter a warm, shallow pool (usually about 25–30 cm deep).
- The lid or door can be closed for full darkness or left slightly open if you prefer.
- Soft ambient music or light may play at the start, then fade to silence and darkness.
- You float effortlessly, with no pressure points — almost like zero gravity.
The Experience
- At first, you might notice your thoughts racing or your body adjusting.
- As you settle in, you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins.
- Sessions usually last 60–90 minutes, though shorter floats are available.
After the Float
- You shower again to rinse off the salt.
- Many people feel deeply relaxed, mentally clear, and physically light.
- It’s common to feel a lingering calm for hours or even days.
